Menorca is a Biosphere Reserve all year round, yet it is usually visited only in summer. That is a mistake: from October to May, the island has an opera season, gastronomic events built around local produce, Talayotic visits with archaeologists, races along the Camí de Cavalls, and empty coves. These are the dated events that justify the trip, and how to get to each one.
Every date has been checked against the official source for each event on 22 September 2026. Each listing links to its own page, with the exact venue and how to get there.
The essentials
- October and November are the best months: music, gastronomy, heritage and sport, with the sea still pleasant.
- December brings Christmas fairs and theatre.
- January and May each have one unrepeatable date: the Trail dels Fars and the Trobades Albert Camus.
- Getting there: the airport is next to Maó, about 10 minutes away; Ciutadella is about 45 minutes by car.
October: the best season
The Teatre Principal in Maó opens its autumn-winter season on 2 October with Tartini and Schubert by the Orquesta de Cámara Illa de Menorca. On the 24th, “El barbero de Picasso”, with Pepe Viyuela takes the stage, and on the 30th, Marco Mezquida and LINA_ with “O Fado”.
At the table, from 9 to 18 October come the Menorcan red-cow festival, and from 16 to 18, the Fira del Formatge Mahón-Menorca. Heritage opens up with guides: from 9 to 11, the Jornades Europees de Patrimoni; from the 11th, the autumn outings of the Biosphere Reserve; and from the 18th, Talayotic Menorca with archaeologists, free and by booking.
And the island runs: the Volta a Menorca en BTT from 9 to 11, the Volta Cicloturista Internacional from 23 to 25, and the October Trail along the Camí de Cavalls on the 24th.
November: opera and berenar pagès
1 November is the Mitja Marató de Menorca. From 6 to 15, the Berenar Pagès days celebrate the traditional Menorcan farmhouse lunch with local produce, over two weekends. On the 21st, Donizetti’s three queens open Maó’s 56th opera season, with Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Illes Balears.
December: Christmas and theatre
On Wednesdays in December, participating restaurants build their menus around brou, the traditional broth: “els dimecres és dia de brou”. From 5 to 8 comes the Fira de Nadal de Maó, and until the 24th there are Christmas fairs and markets in the villages. On the 13th, the Principal marks its 197th anniversary with “La tabernera del puerto”, and on the 29th, the Orquesta de Cámara sees out the year with Strauss and Tchaikovsky.
January and May: two dates found nowhere else
On 24 January, the Trail dels Fars covers 46 km of the north coast, from the Cavalleria lighthouse to Ciutadella, in the depths of winter. From 7 to 9 May, the Trobades Albert Camus mark ten years of thinking about the Mediterranean in Sant Lluís, the village where his grandmother was born.
Things to do any day
- Walk a stage of the Camí de Cavalls.
- Climb Monte Toro to see the whole island.
- Step into Talayotic Menorca and spend a morning at the Museu de Menorca.
- Wander the Fortaleza de La Mola and visit the gin distillery on Maó’s harbour.
- Taste Mahón-Menorca cheese at the dairy.
- Watch the Starlight sky through a telescope.
Getting there
Menorca airport (MAH) is next to Maó: about 10 minutes by car to the centre, and bus line 10 connects it with Maó’s bus station, from where buses run to the rest of the island. Ciutadella is about 45 minutes by car; the south coast, 25 to 40.
Outside summer, bus frequencies drop, and many of these events finish at night. If you are staying outside Maó, a door-to-door pre-booked transfer or a car pays off. All the options, with their journey times, are in our guide from Menorca airport to your hotel.
