Spring to autumn · booking required · Fornells (Es Mercadal)

The llaüt is the traditional boat of these islands: wood, a slow engine and room for very few. Leaving Fornells in one and tracing the north coast — Cavalleria, Binimel·là, the red coves no road reaches — is the calmest way to see Menorca from the water. Small groups, book ahead, and departures depend on the sea.

Things to do

Step into Talayotic Menorca

All year · seasonal opening hours · Torre d'en Galmés (Alaior)

Menorca has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023 for its Talayotic culture, and Torre d'en Galmés is the largest prehistoric settlement in the Balearics: more than six hectares of talayots, round houses, a taula precinct and a water system cut into the rock. You walk it without queues and almost always in silence. If that leaves you wanting more, the Naveta des Tudons and Talatí de Dalt are half an hour away by car.

Things to do

Shop at Ciutadella's municipal market

All year · mornings · Mercat Municipal, Ciutadella

Fish and shellfish straight off the boat, fruit and vegetables from island smallholders, and an arcade where people come as much to greet each other as to buy. It is the living market of the western city and the cheapest way to understand what is eaten here, and when. Go in the morning and have breakfast on the spot.

Things to do

Climb Monte Toro and see the whole island

All year · El Toro (Es Mercadal)

358 metres, the highest point on Menorca, and from the top you see the island from sea to sea: Maó on one side, Ciutadella on the other, both coasts at once. Up there are the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Toro and a terrace for coffee. You drive up a winding road; on a clear autumn day it is the best map of Menorca there is.

A morning at the Museu de Menorca, in Maó's Franciscan cloister

All year round (closed Mondays) · Museu de Menorca, Avda. Doctor Guàrdia s/n (plaça des Monestir), Maó

The island's museum occupies the former convent of Sant Francesc in Maó, completed in the early eighteenth century on the site of the city's first Franciscan convent, and keeps its austere Baroque cloister; it opened as a museum in 1998. A plan for windy or winter days, when Menorca's history is best understood. Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 to 19:00; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10:00 to 14:00. Admission is free on Sundays and, from October to May, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 15:00 to 19:00. Closed Mondays and on 1, 6 and 17 January, 7 and 8 September, and 24, 25, 26 and 31 December.

The home of the Counts of Torre-saura for 177 years (1818-1995), with a neoclassical façade of two Italianate loggias over the Born, which Archduke Ludwig Salvator described as “without doubt the most beautiful mansion on the island”. Taste Mahón-Menorca cheese at the dairy

All year · booking required · Subaida (Es Mercadal)

Mahón-Menorca cheese carries a Protected Designation of Origin, and it makes far more sense once you have watched it being made. At Subaida you visit the dairy of a working farm and taste the same cheese at several ages: young, semi-cured and cured, one after the other. You leave able to tell an artisan wheel from an industrial one with your eyes shut. Book ahead.

Things to do

Follow the Menorca wine route

All year · harvest in late summer · Binifadet (Sant Lluís) and wineries across the island

Menorca only started making wine again two decades ago, and today there are a dozen small wineries scattered across the island. Binifadet, in Sant Lluís, is the easiest way in: a tour, a tasting and a terrace among the vines to stay for lunch. From there you carry on to Vinya Sa Cúdia, Binitord or Son Cremat. Booking is advisable.
