From the shore at Corralejo to the tip of Jandía, Fuerteventura is longer than it looks. On the map everything is close; on the road, the south is more than an hour from the north. Getting around well here is not about speed: it is about choosing a base, accepting that some days are for driving and others for staying put, and not trying to see everything.

The essentials

  • Car: close to essential. The FV-1 runs north and the FV-2 south; from the airport to Morro Jable is about 85-90 km.
  • Bus: lines 3, 6 and 10 are the most useful, changing at the island bus station in Puerto del Rosario. Timetables at tiadhe.com.
  • Ferry to Lanzarote: Corralejo to Playa Blanca, about 25-35 minutes.
  • Lobos: a boat of about 15 minutes from Corralejo and, separately, prior authorisation from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, with limited places per time slot.
  • Rules: no driving off-track and no vehicles in protected areas.

The bus: good for linking towns

The island bus network — in the Canaries the bus is the guagua — links the main towns and works well for specific journeys. The most useful routes for visitors:

  • Route 3: Puerto del Rosario – airport – Caleta de Fuste.
  • Route 6: Puerto del Rosario – Corralejo, around 40-45 minutes.
  • Route 10: Puerto del Rosario – airport – Gran Tarajal – Costa Calma – Morro Jable, with few departures a day.

Everything runs through the island bus station in Puerto del Rosario, which is where you change. To get from a northern village to a southern beach the bus is of little use; for a day in the capital or a hop between towns, it is fine. Always check timetables on tiadhe.com: they differ between weekdays, weekends and public holidays.

The car: close to essential

The inland villages — Betancuria, Pájara, La Oliva — the viewpoints and most of the long beaches are far from any stop. That is why almost everyone who comes unhurried hires a car. The main road, the FV-1 to the north and the FV-2 to the south, is good and quiet away from the approaches to Puerto del Rosario.

Worth bearing in mind:

  • Distances: the airport to Morro Jable is around 85-90 km. A return trip to the southern tip takes a whole day.
  • The contract: many companies exclude dirt tracks from cover. Read it before you leave the tarmac.
  • The rules: no driving off the marked tracks, and no vehicles in protected areas. Motor vehicles are not allowed into the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park: it is explored on foot, along the designated paths.

The Cofete track: a different pace

Cofete beach, on the windward side of Jandía, is reached along an unsurfaced track of about 18-20 km from Morro Jable, with narrow stretches and bends along the hillside. It is not a road to rush, nor one to drive in a car whose insurance does not cover it. Go slowly, stay on the track, set off with a full tank and come back in daylight. There are no beach services, and the Atlantic on that coast is to be watched with respect, not swum in lightly.

Ferries: to Lanzarote and Lobos

  • To Lanzarote: ferries leave the port of Corralejo for Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote, with a crossing of about 25-35 minutes and several daily sailings from different operators. It is the natural link between the two islands; check timetables with each company, as they change with the season.
  • To Lobos: the boat from Corralejo takes about 15 minutes, but the ticket and the permit are two separate things. Landing on the islet requires prior authorisation from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, with limited places per time slot, applied for through its official channel. Check before you go: without it, there is no visit.

What stays behind

No sand from the dunes, no stones, no shells from the beaches. Much of this landscape is fragile and protected, and what looks like a harmless keepsake, multiplied by thousands of visitors, adds up.

Our view

Pick a base — the north if you want villages and ferries, the south if you are after endless beaches and silence — and plan the week around few long drives. One day inland by car, another for Cofete at an easy pace, the rest close to home. If you are still planning your arrival, start with getting from the airport to your hotel.
