Fuerteventura is not a golf island in the classic sense: there are no pine valleys, no fairways between olive trees. What it has is a landscape of volcanic stone, sand and ocean, and three 18-hole courses that make the most of it. Two sit side by side at Caleta de Fuste, on the east coast, a few minutes from the airport. The third is in the south, near Morro Jable, at the foot of the Jandía peninsula.
If you travel with your clubs, this guide explains what each course is like, who it suits and how to plan the trip so you do not spend the day on the road.
The essentials
- Three 18-hole courses: Fuerteventura Golf Club and Salinas de Antigua (Caleta de Fuste) and Jandía Golf (south).
- Near the airport: the two at Caleta de Fuste, around 8–9 km away.
- Designers: Juan Catarineu (Fuerteventura Golf Club), Manuel Piñero (Salinas de Antigua) and Ron Kirby (Jandía).
- Green fees: vary by season and tee time; check when booking.
- Always book your tee time in advance.
Fuerteventura Golf Club, the island’s first
On the Jandía road, by Caleta de Fuste, lies Fuerteventura Golf Club, the island’s oldest course, designed by Juan Catarineu. It has a clubhouse, pro shop, driving range, short-game areas, a restaurant and lessons. It is the obvious choice if you want to play on the day you land without travelling: it is a short hop from the airport and from Caleta de Fuste’s hotels.
Salinas de Antigua, lakes and dunes
Close by, Salinas de Antigua Golf Club opened in 2006 to a design by Manuel Piñero. It is a par 70 with four lakes, volcanic-sand bunkers and dunes that shelter it from the wind. It is a slightly shorter course with more water in play: it rewards precision over length. It has a driving range, putting green and golf school.
With the two courses so close together, Caleta de Fuste works as a golf base: play one in the morning, rest, and switch to the other the next day with only a few minutes in the car.
Jandía Golf, in the south
At the other end of the island, near Morro Jable, is Jandía Golf: 18 holes, par 72, designed by Ron Kirby. It opened in 2007, was closed for a period and reopened in December 2014. It is open all year and booking is essential. Recent player reviews of its condition are mixed: ask about course conditions when you book.
Its strength is location. If you are staying in the south, near Jandía’s great beaches, you can combine golf with Cofete or the Sotavento lagoon without crossing the island.
How to plan it
- An intensive golf week → base yourself at Caleta de Fuste for the two eastern courses, with the airport close at hand.
- Golf and southern beaches → base yourself near Morro Jable and Jandía Golf; play one of the eastern courses as a day trip.
- All three courses → better from two bases than one: the island is long and the distances between north and south add up.
With a golf bag, the practical options are a hire car or a private transfer booked in advance with your luggage noted. Before booking the car, read how to get around Fuerteventura and the options from the airport to your hotel. To choose a base, see Fuerteventura’s quiet luxury hotels.
When to play
Fuerteventura’s mild climate allows golf all year round. Autumn, winter and spring are the most pleasant months for four hours outdoors; summer brings more midday heat and, above all, more wind. If you are thinking of a long winter stay, read Fuerteventura in winter. Whatever the season, an early tee time is wise: the first hour is usually the calmest.
Our view
Golf in Fuerteventura does not compete with the lush courses of northern Europe, nor does it try to. Its appeal lies elsewhere: playing in winter light among lava, sand and lakes, with the Atlantic as a backdrop and the airport a few minutes away. For the traveller arriving with clubs, the choice is simple: Caleta de Fuste to play a lot and move little; Jandía for those who want golf as one more part of the south.
