For years, Roque Nublo was a victim of its own silhouette. The rock you can see from half the island — a monolith of around 80 metres rising from the summit at 1,813 metres above sea level — drew so many people at once that the path felt like a queue and the road at La Goleta like an improvised car park.

That ended in February 2025. Since then, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the island government, has required advance booking to enter the protected area around Roque Nublo. For travellers in search of calm, it is the best news the summit has given in a long time.

The essentials

  • No booking, no entry. Bookings are made through the Cabildo’s official channel, Gran Canaria Senderos (grancanariasenderos.com).
  • Confirmation arrives by email with a QR code, which you show at the checkpoint.
  • The checkpoint is at the entrance, at Degollada de La Goleta, where the path begins.
  • You can no longer park at La Goleta. The car stays in the car parks at Tejeda or Cruz de Los Llanos, and you go up on the shuttle bus — the guagua, as buses are called in the Canaries.
  • Registered residents of Tejeda and Artenara do not need to book, provided they carry their documents.
  • Times, places and conditions can change: check them on Gran Canaria Senderos before you go.

Why booking is good news

The Cabildo’s aim was simple: to stop Roque Nublo being overwhelmed. According to RTVC, by August 2026 the system had been running for a year and a half, with more than 100,000 visits booked, and on some days every place is taken.

What really changes is up there. With visitor numbers kept in check, the path has its silences back: wind in the pines, gravel underfoot, Roque Bentayga across the caldera and, on clear days, Mount Teide above the sea of clouds. This is the same rock the ancient Canarians revered — its surroundings belong to the cultural landscape UNESCO has protected since 2019, as we explain in what UNESCO protects in the heart of Gran Canaria — and it makes more sense without a group chatting beside you.

How to book

Well ahead, especially for weekends and public holidays, when places run out first. Bookings are made on grancanariasenderos.com, the Cabildo’s hiking portal. Keep the QR code on your phone and, just in case, a screenshot too: signal on the summit is not always reliable.

Book only through the official channel. If another website offers you “tickets” to Roque Nublo, be wary and check with the Cabildo.

Getting there: the car stays below

Degollada de La Goleta is no longer a car park. The Cabildo has set up park-and-ride car parks at Tejeda and Cruz de Los Llanos and a shuttle bus up to La Goleta.

Stops and timetables for the shuttle and the regular buses vary with the season: check them the day before. For the rest of the island, see getting around Gran Canaria.

The right hour

Once you have booked, the quiet hour is the first of the morning. Light slants into the Tejeda caldera, the air is clear and, on many days, the sea of clouds lies below the path. At midday the rock is still there, but the calm is shared among more people.

It is cool at the top even when the coast is hot: bring a warm layer and walking boots. The path is short, but it is steep in places, with loose stone.

What not to do

Roque Nublo is a protected natural area. Walk only on the path, do not fly drones without authorisation and do not take any stones home. What makes this place special is precisely that it stays as it is.

Our view

Putting limits on a landmark takes nothing away from it: it gives something back. Roque Nublo with booking is the Roque Nublo worth the journey. Book early, go up early and stay at the top a little longer than you planned.

If you linger on the summit until dark, the sky is another reason not to come down: we cover it in the summit sky. And for the island’s other famous views at the right hour, see Gran Canaria’s famous places, at the hour they turn quiet again.

Information as of October 2026, checked in the Canarian press (Canarias Ahora, RTVC) against announcements from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. Access conditions, timetables and the shuttle may change: check Gran Canaria Senderos before you go.
