Ses Caramelles de Nadal at the Matines Mass

On Christmas Eve, during the Matines Mass, the esquadres de caramellers sing ses Caramelles de Nadal in the island's various churches. These are carols announcing the birth of Christ, traditional music of the Pitiusas declared an intangible Bien de Interés Cultural in 2006. It is not a show for visitors: it is Formentera's Christmas as the island lives it, in its quietest season.

Getting there

From Ibiza Airport to the port of Eivissa (about 8 km: about 15 min by taxi or the AERO2 bus, 30-35 min) and boat to La Savina (about 30 min). In winter it's worth checking the time of the last boat back: Turismo de Formentera warns that bad weather can disrupt some crossings. The churches of Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and El Pilar de la Mola are in the villages; at night, take a taxi.
