Gran Canaria is known as a sun-and-beach island, and it has earned the name. But quiet luxury here is not measured in stars on a sign; it is measured in what you hear from your room at night. And the island offers something rare: three entirely different landscapes to sleep in, no more than an hour or so apart by road. The historic city, the dunes, and the summit above the clouds.

This is our selection. It is not a ranking or a paid list: no position is bought.

The essentials

  • The city: Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, in Las Palmas.
  • The dunes: Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia, beside Maspalomas.
  • The summit: Parador de Cruz de Tejeda, more than 1,500 metres up, a Starlight accommodation.
  • Holiday homes: only with a tourism registration number. We explain how to choose.

The city: Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel is a historic hotel, first opened in 1890 and rebuilt in the 1920s by Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, set in gardens and a stroll from the centre. It is the house for those who want the capital: the old quarter of Vegueta, the city beach of Las Canteras, the markets and an Atlantic city that lives all year round. Inside is Poemas, its restaurant. Staying here means choosing a Gran Canaria with a life of its own, not a seasonal island.

The dunes: Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia

Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia is the opposite of a tower-block resort: colonial-style villas, some 400 metres from the dunes of Maspalomas. From here the dunes can be walked at sunrise, before the heat and the crowds. Remember they are a protected natural area: walk only on the marked paths, keep out of fenced-off zones, do not build stone windbreaks and do not take any sand away.

The summit: Parador de Cruz de Tejeda

Up in the centre of the island, the Parador de Cruz de Tejeda stands more than 1,500 metres high, facing the silhouettes of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga. The Starlight Foundation has certified it as a Starlight accommodation for the quality of its night sky. On many evenings the sea of clouds settles below and night arrives clear. It is the place for those who come to walk, to look and to do nothing more. If you plan to walk up to Roque Nublo, remember access requires advance booking through Gran Canaria Senderos.

If you would rather have a house

Gran Canaria has rural houses on the summit, homes in the villages of the north and seafront apartments in the south. To choose one calmly, three criteria:

  1. It must have a registration number in the Canary Islands’ General Tourism Register, shown on the listing. Without it, do not book.
  2. The place should give you what you came for: silence on the summit, sea in the south, village life in the north.
  3. Access should be reasonable: many inland houses lie at the end of winding roads; check how to get there before you commit.

That is why we do not recommend specific houses: we cannot verify the status of each one.

Which to choose

  • You want city, culture and an urban beach → Santa Catalina, in Las Palmas.
  • You want sun, dunes at sunrise and no driving → Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia.
  • You want silence, trails and sky → Parador de Cruz de Tejeda.
  • You want to arrive without improvising → from Gran Canaria airport to your hotel.
  • You want to head out to sea → Gran Canaria from the water.

Our view

The best thing about Gran Canaria is that it does not make you choose a single island. If your trip allows, split it: a few nights in the city or by the dunes, then two on the summit. Coming down from the clouds to the sea in a single morning is the simplest way to understand this miniature continent.
