Above the cliffs of Port de Sant Miquel, in the island's north, the Cova de Can Marçà formed over more than 100,000 years, drop by drop, in the limestone rock. Small red and black marks left by smugglers to find their way back to the sea are still visible on its walls. It can only be visited with a guide, on tours of about 40 minutes, and it is open all year round; tickets are bought online for a time slot or directly at the cave.

The fortress that crowns the city of Eivissa is Renaissance in style: it was designed by the Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi and completed in the late sixteenth century to defend the island against the Turkish fleet and its corsairs. It rings the Puig de Vila with ten hectares, a 1,800-metre perimeter and seven bastions, and forms part of the “Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture” World Heritage property inscribed by UNESCO in 1999. You enter through the Portal de ses Taules and follow the wall-walk from bastion to bastion; the Sant Joan bastion houses the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa (MACE).

It was the city's cemetery from the moment the Phoenicians founded it, in the mid-seventh century BC, 500 metres from the Puig de Vila; the name comes from the windmills that once crowned the hill. It covers almost five hectares and is, according to the Museo Arqueológico de Ibiza y Formentera, which runs it, the largest and best-preserved Phoenician-Punic necropolis in the western Mediterranean; since 1999 it has formed part of the “Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture” World Heritage property. The monographic museum displays the finds, and part of the necropolis can be walked through, with burial chambers at different levels: the museum lends out helmets and recommends comfortable footwear. It opens Tuesday to Sunday and, according to its website, admission is currently free.

All year round · Parc Natural de ses Salines, between ses Salines and es Cavallet beaches, Sant Josep de sa Talaia
Within the Parc Natural de ses Salines, protected under Law 17/2001 and shared with Formentera, the Ajuntament de Sant Josep runs the ses Portes route, which follows the seafront edge of the salt pans between ses Salines and es Cavallet beaches, with panels on their flora, fauna and history. It passes the Pou des Carbó, a well dug in 1765 that supplied water to steam boilers, and the Torre de ses Portes, built in the seventeenth century to watch over the passage between Ibiza and Formentera, and ends at the Punta des Cavallet, the old salt-loading quay. It can be started from either end, and there are shaded alternatives through the sabina woods.
