Decades ago Lanzarote decided not to build upwards. César Manrique’s influence left an island of white houses and low rooflines, and it shows in how you sleep here: luxury is horizontal. Suites opening onto the Atlantic, gardens of cactus and lava, houses of a few rooms set in a landscape of ash.

This selection is neither a ranking nor a paid list: no place pays to appear or for its position.

The essentials

  • Three areas, three trips. Playa Blanca (south, large seafront hotels), Puerto del Carmen (east coast, smaller places) and the interior (La Geria and the north, intimate hotels).
  • No high-rises. The island keeps a low, white architecture, hotels included.
  • A car. From the interior and from Playa Blanca, all but essential.
  • Holiday rentals: only with a visible registration number. When in doubt, leave it out.

Playa Blanca: the grand house by the sea

Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort is the south’s great hotel: a five-star on the seafront at Playa Blanca, with a thalassotherapy centre and spa, several restaurants and generous suites. It is a house designed for families, with a kids’ club and sports facilities, and the Papagayo beaches are close by. For those travelling with children who want everything under one roof.

Puerto del Carmen: smaller houses

Lani’s Suites de Luxe is the opposite of a resort: a small suite hotel, adults only, on the Puerto del Carmen seafront, with its own restaurant. It suits those who want peace and attentive service without giving up a lively town a few steps away.

Hotel Lava Beach, on the same stretch of coast, facing Matagorda beach, is a five-star hotel with a spa — sauna, hammam, Jacuzzi — and a large outdoor pool. A middle ground between the scale of a resort and the intimacy of a small house.

The interior: the estate among the vines

César Lanzarote, in La Asomada, on the wine road that leads to La Geria, is the most singular house on the list. A handful of rooms in a restored historic building, with a garden, a pool and views over vines and volcanoes. There is no sea in front: there are volcanoes, vines in hollows of ash and a silence the coast does not have. The landscape around it, in La Geria and its wine.

In the north — Haría, the valley of a thousand palms, the villages around it — there are plenty of small rural hotels and country houses. It is another kind of calm: white villages, dark nights and the Mirador del Río a few minutes away. If you choose one, check that it is registered. We cover it in the north of Lanzarote.

Before you book a holiday rental

In the Canary Islands, a legal holiday rental must be entered in the General Tourism Register and display that number in its listings. This is no mere formality: it is the guarantee that the property meets the required standards and that your booking is protected. At Calma Society we do not recommend or link to any holiday rental without that number. If a listing does not show it, ask; if you are not given it, look elsewhere.

Our view

On Lanzarote, where you stay shapes the trip more than on other islands, because the landscape genuinely changes from one area to the next. The south is sea, sun and comfort; the interior is lava, vines and silence. On a first visit, a combination works well: a few nights by the sea and a few inland. And whatever you choose, make it somewhere registered: calm also means knowing everything is in order.

Selection based on each establishment’s public information, checked in October 2026. Facilities, age policies and opening seasons change: confirm them on each hotel’s official website before booking. This guide charges nothing for inclusion or position.
