A morning at the Museu de Menorca, in Maó's Franciscan cloister

The island's museum occupies the former convent of Sant Francesc in Maó, completed in the early eighteenth century on the site of the city's first Franciscan convent, and keeps its austere Baroque cloister; it opened as a museum in 1998. A plan for windy or winter days, when Menorca's history is best understood. Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 to 19:00; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10:00 to 14:00. Admission is free on Sundays and, from October to May, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 15:00 to 19:00. Closed Mondays and on 1, 6 and 17 January, 7 and 8 September, and 24, 25, 26 and 31 December.

Getting there

In Maó's old town, about 6 km from the airport (10-15 minutes by car); bus line 10 to Maó station and about 5 minutes on foot from the centre, following the signposts. There's no on-site parking: the des Freginal car park is the best located, and there's free parking at the port.
