Almost everything sold as ‘historic’ has been rebuilt. A period tram that was actually assembled in the nineties, a carriage restored until nothing original is left. Which is why it is worth being clear about this one.
The short answer
Yes. The Sóller train runs on the line opened in 1912, with wooden hauled stock of which some carriages date from that year. The brass fittings, leather straps and slatted seats are original or faithful to the period.
With one qualification worth knowing: the four railcars that work the line today are from 1929, when the railway was electrified. It has run largely unchanged ever since. So no, it is not all from 1912; but neither is it a replica. It is one of Europe’s historic lines still in continuous service without having become a stage set.
What it was built for
Not for this. It was built for oranges.
The Sóller valley produced citrus and oil, and the Serra de Tramuntana stood between it and Palma: the only route was a winding road that made getting goods out slow and expensive. The line opened on 6 April 1912 to solve precisely that, and solved it so well that the valley changed scale.
That people now ride it for pleasure is a happy accident. The train was not designed so anyone could look at the landscape; it was designed so the fruit would arrive sooner.
Why the journey feels different
Because the stock was not built for speed. You go slowly, windows open, through tunnels and over viaducts, and the carriage smells of wood and varnish. The benches are hard. There are no screens and no commercial announcements.
That, which in 1912 was simply how you travelled, is now an uncommon luxury: a journey that asks nothing of you. Nothing to do, nothing to choose, no phone to check. It lasts what it lasts.
It is probably the most elegant way to cross the Serra de Tramuntana, and certainly the calmest.
How to fit it in
- The train links Palma with Sóller. The tram, a separate thing, runs from Sóller down to Port de Sóller. Doing both in sequence is the combination that makes sense.
- Timetables and frequencies change with the season: confirm them before you go.
- Go outside summer and the valley is at its best, with no queue for a window seat.

Our take
There is a moment, coming out of one of the tunnels, when the whole valley opens at once. It has been happening for over a century, and it has happened to a great many people before you, in that same carriage. That continuity — not the nostalgia, the continuity — is what makes this journey worth it, and what keeps it from feeling like a fairground ride.
Go without hurrying. It is literally the only thing it asks.
